Soldier's Heritage Program
1775-1991

Program Objectives

The program objectives are to familiarize students with the evolution of American soldiery through the use of artifacts, to gain insight into the living conditions of soldiers at war, and to develop an understanding of America’s struggle to preserve freedom. The wars covered are the War for American Independence, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam War, and the Gulf War.

Program Materials

Original and reproduced items representing each war

Outline

The chosen wars are introduced in chronological progression. To assist the student in understanding why we teach about the wars chosen, a general overview of events and atmospheres surrounding the wars is presented. Throughout the program children will have opportunities to interact with the artifacts by modeling uniforms and equipment so that the participant and the class have a chance to ascertain a better understanding of the function of those items. Students will learn why certain military equipment was used and why it was superseded by "newer" technologies.
