February 2:    A Salute to the Tuskegee Airmen

·      Members of the Tuskegee Airmen will be available to discuss artifacts on display from noon to 1 p.m. From 1 to 3 p.m., there will be a viewing of the
movie The Tuskegee Airmen. After the movie, guest speakers will relate their experiences while serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

February Film Fest Month:   

·      The museum will host a film festival during the month of February featuring films with African-American themes. All movies are free with each day’s paid
admission. All movies start at 1 p.m.

·      Feb. 9: Buffalo Soldiers
Starring Danny Glover, this 1997 movie tells the true story of the black cavalry corps known as the Buffalo Soldiers. These troops patrolled America's west
after the Civil War. In addition to keeping the peace, these men had to fight the racism of their commanders and other white soldiers.

·      Feb. 16: Men of Bronze
The definitive story of black American soldiers of the 369th U.S. combat regiment, the 15th Infantry from New York, know as the "Harlem Hellfighters," who served with the French army in World War I. The film uses photographs, interviews with veterans, and film from the French and American national Archives to recount the saga of the "Harlem Hellfighters," offering an inspiring tribute to these unsung heroes and an unforgettable look at World War I.


·      Feb. 23: Glory
Starring Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick, this 1989 movie chronicles the all-black 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer
Infantry. Their final assault on Fort Wagner, S.C., demonstrated their bravery and turned bitter defeat into a symbolic victory that brought recognition to black soldiers.

May 17:    Armed Forces Day Toy Soldier Show

·      Vendors will sell antique and contemporary toy soldiers and miniatures. Historical miniature kits and models in metal and plastic are also for sale. Join us for this
salute to Armed Forces Day.

May 26:    Memorial Day

·      Sponsored by American Legion, Braxton-Perkins Post #25, this annual ceremony is held at 11 a.m. at the Victory Arch, 25th Street & West Avenue in downtown
Newport News. After the ceremony, the public is invited learn about America’s rich military heritage at the Virginia War Museum. Visit the museum on Memorial
Day and receive $1 off the posted admission prices.

September 27-28:    Annual Military Vehicle Show

·      A variety of vintage military vehicles will be displayed including jeeps and military motorcycles. Vendors will sell insignia, books, uniforms and accoutrements.
Sponsored in conjunction with the Hampton Roads Militaria Society, this free event is fun for the entire family.

November 11:    Veterans Day

December 6:    Holiday Militaria Show

·      Vendors will sell insignia, books, uniforms, accoutrements and more. The museum’s gift shop will offer special discounts on selected items.

December 7:  4 p.m.  Pearl Harbor Day Memorial Ceremony

·      This annual tradition features a wreath-laying ceremony at the new Pearl Harbor Survivors Association monument on the grounds adjacent to the museum.
