War War I Meuse-Argonne Artillery Exhibit Opening

November 9, 2014 - 1 p.m.

On November 9, 2014, the Virginia War Museum will begin its commemoration of the World War I Centennial with the openining of its Meuse-Argonne Artillery Exhibit at 1 p.m.

The exhibit will feature a recently restored 10-ton Hold Artillery Tractor and a 60-punder Whitworth gun. These items are some of the first artifacts acquired by the Virginia War Museum when it was founded in November 1923. In 1918, Brigadier General Ernest Swinton, a leading proponenet of the British tank program, called the American-made Holt tractor "one of the most important military vehicles of all time."

The exhibit is placed into context by a mural produced by award-winning Yorktown artist Susan Aldrich. The painting is based on several panoramic photographs taken by the U.S. Army Signal Corps of the Meuse-Argonne front on September 26-27, 1918. This stunning art, which draws visitors into the gallery, offers a stark landscape, which is slightly brightened by the brief, reflecting sunshine in the distance. The sun's glimmer is like a ray of hope, perhaps felt by many a doughboy that the killing ground of trench warfare would soon conclude and find the world at peace. Susan Aldrich will be on-hand for the exhibit opening.

As part of this grand opening, a musuem volunteer will be firing five blank cannon rounds from an original World War I cannon as a salute to the Great War. This will take place at approximately 12:45 pm and again at approximately at 2:30 pm.

A brief lecture, "Causes of World War I" will be presented by noted local historian, John V. Quarstein. A reception will follow the program which is free and open to the public.
